Tornado at Lafayette, Tennessee

Macon County and the city of Lafayette were hit by a devastating tornado on February 5, 2008. The tornado left 18 people dead and 250 homes and businesses destroyed, including 3 churches. United Methodist Church Pastor Michael Welch, his wife, Julie, and their two young children, Jesse, and Hannah, were killed in a tragic six-vehicle accident due to the tornado damage. Rev Peter Whatton has asked that if anyone feels that they are able to help the community rebuild, he would be very grateful to receive any donations. 01237 421420.

We are pleased to announce that David Morris has accepted our invitation to be our next Superintendent Minister. He will be taking up the appointment from September 2008. We shall be arranging a welcome service for him and his wife Jackie round about August time. Thank you to all who made themselves available to meet them on their tour of the Circuit.

David and Jackie have two children who are both training to be solicitors and share a flat in London.

Extract from David's Profile

Currently David is Superintendent Minister in Malta which is part of the South East District. It is also a partnership with the Church of Scotland. Before being posted to Malta he was a superintendent minister in the St Austell Circuit where he began as a probationer. He came into the ministry after seventeen years in the army and six years in commerce, where he learned useful administrative and organizational skills.

David is committed to preaching and leading worship which he regards as his primary calling. He considers the proper celebration of public worship as the main witness of the Christian community. It is critically important that minister and people work together to offer worship that is worthy of God, and expressive of all sections of the church community, including children and young people and accessible to all enquirers.

David has considerable experience in pastoral care, and supporting probationers and local preachers.

David describes his ministry as flexible and adaptive. He believes that ministry has to be worked out in its context, and says that we have to build on local experience to help our people and churches become the best witnesses they can be in their own particular situation. He also describes his ministry as challenging and progressive.

We very much look forward to David joining us and working out his ministry among us.
